The Library purchased a new delivery van for its Books to Go service in spring 2022 — a longtime goal for the program, which offers free delivery of loaned materials to preschools, home child care providers, or kindergarten sites located within the Library’s service area. I managed the design of the vehicle wrap, creating an updated illustration based on an old graphic that was used in marketing materials for the service in the mid-1990s. I met with the Outreach team to learn about their goals and vision for the project — one of their primary wishes was a design that was dynamic, contemporary, and “makes people excited to see us coming.” With this vehicle's bold, colorful, and flashy look, the Outreach team definitely stands out when they hit the streets bringing knowledge and resources to Kansas City.
IMAGE BELOW: The QR code on the passenger side of the vehicle directs people to the Library's online library card signup portal, where people can sign up for cards online and immediately begin borrowing materials and accessing other resources and services. The position of the code on the van allows it to be used as a sort of promotional display when parked at community events, reducing the need for staff to haul around additional signage. It also has the benefit of engaging with passengers in cars while in transit or in traffic (although drivers, keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road!)
