ABOUT:
The Kansas City Public Library's Outreach department includes a team dedicated to youth and family services, making appearances at community events where they regularly give away books, sign up families for library cards, and offer other games and fun activities for children.
In 2022 as the Library was purchasing new vehicles as part of expanding community outreach and engagement, I worked with department staff on developing a graphic wrap for the dedicated youth and family activities van.
From the start we wanted something that would be eye-catching, particularly since we wanted to make the Library's presence known at public events. The concept I proposed began with illustrating piles of colorful books that would be spread across the sides of the van, with large, balloonish lettering to promote the Library name and messaging. I included a QR code in the design that led to the online library card signup portal. This served two purposes: it provided staff with a large and convenient display for library card signups at events, and also served as a general promotional tool while the van was traveling around the metro.
In an early draft, I included a small cat in the back window of the vehicle, waving at anyone who may be following the van in traffic. The youth and family team liked the idea, and we began exploring the idea of introducing additional animals into the design, making the tone even more playful. The final design includes a menagerie of different playful critters spread throughout the van's illustration.
When youth and family staff drive the bookmobile to events and festivals, they now have a vehicle that delights kids and families.
Part of the design included a "We Love KC" message that could be seen from above. Many of the bookmobile visit sites are in locations near multi-story buildings; knowing that, I designed the rooftop to include this note as a way to further engage any observers who may look out from upper-story windows down on the van.
