ABOUT:
For many years, the KC Library's seasonal adult reading program took place during the winter, but in 2017, adult and youth reading programs joined as a single Summer Reading Program (SRP), creating one great reading challenge for all ages.
To launch the inaugural Adult SRP, I came up with the theme of "Push Your Shelf." Participants were encouraged to read a book outside their comfort zone: explore reading formats they hadn't tried before (such as audiobooks or eBooks); discover different titles using the Library's online catalog; or get fresh reading suggestions from Library staff. We also suggested going beyond the books to challenge readers to take part in activities that are personally enriching or benefit the community.
The previous Winter Reading Program offered participants a prize for completing and recording five books; I suggested that for Summer Reading, we reward adults with a pint glass branded with the year's theme. I designed the glass illustration and identified a drinkware vendor, coordinating the order and delivery.
I designed the suite of promotional materials for adult SRP, which included posters, bookmarks, digital graphics, and a booklet with a collection of suggested book titles that match the theme. I also collaborated with the Director of Readers Services on writing promotional copy and book descriptions and organizing the rollout of communications and assets for the program.
